Modern Love

Dawson’s Creek featured perhaps the best television love story we’ve ever seen—Pacey and Joey. Dawson’s Creek also gave us possibly the best nonsexual love story of all time—Jack and Jen. A pair of rich kids who have been kicked to the curb by their parents and forced to make a chosen family. They each take the other in when the other needs shelter, they provide emotional support, they fight, they make up, they love each other fiercely.

Season two introduces the concept of soul mates, and we spend the series musing on what it means to be soul mates. Initially, we think the soul mates are romantic partnerships as this is hammered into us via Dawson and Joey’s relationship. But after season three, we have reevaluated the concept. Could soul mates be nonromantic partners with an intimacy, bond, and connection so special they are more than just best friends? By series end, we know who the true soul mates in the show are—Jack and Jen.

Dawson’s Creek is a teen show so naturally there are going to be dramatic love stories, that’s what we, as teen girls, tuned in for. However, Dawson’s Creek dives into some more complex takes on love. While Dawson considers himself a romantic, it is Pacey who finds himself in the most romantic relationships throughout the series. As we watch Pacey recover from being sexually assaulted by his teacher and develop his relationship with his sexuality in the wake of that abuse, we see him fall in love with Andie, Joey, and Audrey. Each relationship is unique and special with a modern twist, making consent sexy and setting foundations of respect, and making Pacey the true romantic lead.

Dawson’s Creek makes us contemplate another type of modern love. The love from one’s chosen family. Pacey and the McPhees both have checked out moms and judgmental asshole dads that rule with iron fists. Moreover, Joey and Jen both have parents who are not physically involved in their lives. Interestingly, only Dawson lives with a parent by the end of high school. In the absence of biological family, our kids form a chosen family, which keeps them together through their college years. For millennials, chosen families are real families.

So, ask for consent to board the boat, put on your life jacket, and come celebrate modern love DC style.
